How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?, the second album from Big Red Machine, came out on August 27, 2021, via 37d03d and Jagjaguwar, and it's Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon throwing open the doors of their studio. Dessner produced it, citing the Band's The Last Waltz as a model, and the guest list is long: Taylor Swift, Anaïs Mitchell, Fleet Foxes, Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan, Ben Howard, This Is the Kit and more.
The music moves at a slow, careful pace, soft piano and guitar songs shaded by Dessner's indie rock and Vernon's electronics, and Dessner said it circles childhood, family and mental health. The lyrics dwell on love, loss, grief and looking back. "Renegade" with Swift and "Phoenix" with Mitchell and Fleet Foxes were among five singles. Critics warmed to the sad songs and the guests, though some found the arrangements a bit samey.
