"Weightless" was one of four singles Arlo Parks sent out ahead of My Soft Machine, her second album, which Transgressive released on 26 May 2023. She wrote the words and built the music with Paul Epworth, who produced; Riley MacIntyre and Luke Pickering engineered and David Wrench mixed.
That partnership fits the album's story. Parks called My Soft Machine far more collaborative than her debut, a deeply personal record about her mid-20s: anxiety, friends' substance abuse, first love, grief and joy. She started writing it before Collapsed in Sunbeams came out and recorded it in bursts over 18 months between tours, with My Bloody Valentine and Fontaines D.C. in her ears.
