"Hello" arrived in October 2015 as the lead single from 25, Adele's third studio album, and it plays like a phone call to a past she can't quite let go of. She wrote it with Greg Kurstin, who produced it and played nearly everything in sight, piano, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums, with Adele herself adding drums. It was cut at Metropolis Studios in London and mixed by Tom Elmhirst.
It's a piano ballad soaked in soul, all nostalgia and regret, building until that voice fills the room like weather. Critics fell over themselves, and the song spent ten straight weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. Xavier Dolan directed the video, with Tristan Wilds opposite Adele, and at the 59th Grammys "Hello" took Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
