Jared Leto drew "City of Angels" from his own life in Los Angeles, where he lived with his family, and the city's culture seeps into it. It was one of the first songs written for Thirty Seconds to Mars' fourth album, Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams (2013), but one of the slowest to get onto tape; Leto co-produced it with Steve Lillywhite, and its synthrock gloss and '80s touches showed how far that record wandered.
It went out as a promotional single in the US in July 2013 and climbed to 8 on the Alternative Songs chart. Leto directed the video, in which a string of well-known faces join the band's three members to share their visions of the city; it won the Loudwire Music Award for Best Rock Video and was up for Best Cinematography at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
