About Channel 104.9
Channel 104.9 (KCNL) was San Jose's alternative station from 2001 until the end of 2005, when it flipped to a Spanish-language format. Its Top 104.9 year-end countdowns for 2002 through 2005 and its Top 101 Songs of the '80s are archived on RockLists.
KCNL spent the late 1990s as an all-'80s station before switching to a current-based alternative format as Channel 104.9 in January 2001. Owned by Clear Channel, the station gave the South Bay its own modern rock outlet apart from San Francisco's Live 105, and its year-end countdown was the Top 104.9 Songs of the Year.
From its '80s era the station left behind the Top 101 Songs of the '80s countdown from February 1999, a snapshot of new wave and early alternative favorites that is preserved here. On January 1, 2006, KCNL flipped to a contemporary Spanish format as Romantica, ending its alternative run after five years.
