"Astral Plane" shared lead-single duty with "Shakedown" for The Order of Time, Valerie June's fourth full-length album, released March 10, 2017. June wrote it alone, sings lead and plays acoustic guitar, and Matt Marinelli, who produced the album, recorded, mixed and produced the track while adding acoustic guitar, electric bass and xylophone of his own.
The cast around them is a small orchestra: Steven Bernstein on trumpet, Clark Gayton on trombone, Doug Wieselman on clarinet and baritone sax, Dan Iead on pedal steel, Andy MacLeod on electric guitar, Pete Remm on keyboards and electric piano, and Dan Rieser on drums and percussion. Marinelli was the third producer June tried for the record; the two first crossed paths at Newport Folk Festival in 2014, when he was on the road managing Norah Jones.
