"Heavy Cross" kicked off Music for Men, Gossip's fourth album, in April 2009, and it turned a band that had been playing it live for two years into an international act, a top-ten hit across Europe and a huge one in Germany. Rick Rubin produced it, and Greg Fidelman recorded and mixed it.
The trick is in the guitar. Nathan Howdeshell was chasing the arpeggiated synth of Charlie's "Spacer Woman", so he detuned and muted his strings to mimic it, then laid a bass synth underneath instead of a real bass, steeped in vintage darkwave. Beth Ditto brought the Donna Summer side, with Siouxsie and the Banshees in the mix too, and she has described the song as a tribute to her friends as creative re-creators. It's dance-punk that actually makes you dance.
