"First Day" is one of four singles the Futureheads pulled from their self-titled debut, the British band's first full album, released in July 2004; "Decent Days and Nights", "Meantime" and their cover of Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" were the others. Andy Gill produced it, and the writing credit is shared by Barry Hyde, Dave Hyde, Jaff and Ross Millard.
Alex Smith of Black Dog Films directed the video, as he did for "Decent Days and Nights" and "A to B". The album it came from won the critics over, came back in 2005 as a special edition with a DVD and a pink sleeve in place of the grey one, and Pitchfork ranked it the 33rd best record of 2004.
