"Peace Frog" came tumbling out of Morrison Hotel, the Doors' fifth album, in 1970, and it was built backwards. Robby Krieger wrote the music and the band cut the track before there were any words at all, with Jim Morrison nowhere to be found; they had already been playing it on stage as an instrumental in 1969. Morrison filled the gap later by raiding his own notebooks, stitching the lyric together from three older poems, "Abortion Stories", "Dawn's Highway" and "Newborn Awakening".
The result is a slinky, funky strut, Krieger's guitar yelping over John Densmore's crisp beat and Ray Manzarek's keyboards while Morrison reads his poetry like a man possessed. Paul A. Rothchild produced and Bruce Botnick engineered. America never got it as a single; France heard it on the B-side of "You Make Me Real".
