Stone Temple Pilots chased the chart-topping "Between the Lines" with "Take a Load Off", an Atlantic single lifted from the second slot on their self-titled sixth album in 2010. Dean DeLeo composed it, Robert DeLeo produced, and it's hard rock with the old muscle still in place.
The bigger change was on the lyric sheet. Scott Weiland had been studying more poetic lyricists, looking for a way out of the autobiographical, self-absorbed writing he'd leaned on, and he came away convinced that a story could mean anything or nothing at all. A video followed on September 8, 2010, and the song was used in Shift 2: Unleashed. It also stands as the band's last major single with Weiland: they fired him in 2013, and he died in 2015.
