"Alive" opened the campaign for This Is Acting, Sia's seventh album, as its lead single, and it began as a song meant for someone else. Sia wrote it with Adele and Tobias Jesso Jr. with Adele's third album, 25, in mind, but Adele passed on it, and on "Bird Set Free" too, and let Sia keep both for herself. It came out in September 2015.
It's midtempo synth-pop built as a launch pad for that voice, and the voice is what critics praised, all power and electricity. Jesso sits in on piano, Garrett Ray drums, Erick Serna adds guitar and Manny Marroquin mixed it. It stalled at 56 on the Hot 100 but made the top 40 in more than 15 countries, and she sang it on Saturday Night Live, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The X Factor.
