"She Chose Me" belongs to Dark Matter, the album that ended a nine-year wait for new Randy Newman originals when Nonesuch released it on August 4, 2017, his 15th studio album of original songs. Newman wrote this one on his own, and it was produced by the team of Mitchell Froom, Lenny Waronker and David Boucher, with Boucher also recording and mixing it and Robert Hurwitz credited as executive producer.
The long layoff did not dull the edge: Robert Christgau later ranked Dark Matter the sixth-best album of the entire 2010s.
