Dark Matter, Randy Newman's first album of new songs in nine years, came out on Nonesuch Records on August 4, 2017, with Mitchell Froom producing. It's Newman doing what he's always done best: wry, mordant songs sung by narrators you shouldn't entirely trust, set to piano and Americana arrangements that sound warm until you listen to the words.
The standout story belongs to "Sonny Boy", sung from the point of view of the original bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson, who sits up in heaven stewing over Rice Miller, the man who took his name and got the fame and fortune that came with it. The two never actually met, which never stopped Newman. Robert Christgau later put Dark Matter at number six on his list of the decade's best albums.
