"These Are My Twisted Words" slipped into the world sideways. On 12 August 2009 it appeared unannounced on the BitTorrent tracker What.CD, bundled with a text file of ASCII art, a cryptic poem and a hint at a 17 August release date, and with the pay-what-you-want In Rainbows gambit of 2007 still in the air, the Guardian and Rolling Stone wondered aloud whether Radiohead had leaked it themselves. Five days later the band made it official, offering it free from their own site and as a torrent through Mininova, with artwork by Thom Yorke and longtime collaborator Stanley Donwood that fans were invited to print on tracing paper. Jonny Greenwood's blog post called the song freshly finished and said nothing about the leak.
Nigel Godrich produced and recorded it, and several critics heard krautrock in its churn.
