"First High" was the opening shot from Denim & Diamonds, Nikki Lane's fourth album: she released it on June 2, 2022, the same day she announced the record and revealed that Queens of the Stone Age founder Josh Homme was producing and mixing it. Lane wrote the song with Gabe Simon, and Homme is all over the track, producing, mixing, engineering with Robert Adam Stevenson, and playing electric guitar and percussion.
Around them, Alain Johannes plays electric and acoustic guitars, Matthew Pynn electric guitar and pedal steel, Michael Shuman bass and Carla Azar drums. New West put the album out that September to glowing reviews, with American Songwriter's Hal Horwitz hearing Lane edge toward darker ground while keeping a foot in the country and roots music she came from.
