"The Sound of Sunshine" gave Michael Franti & Spearhead the title of their 2010 album and served as its second single, out on June 1 that year, with the digital release a week later. Franti wrote it with Jason Bowman and Carl Young and produced it himself, with Sly & Robbie adding production of their own, and by his own account it's a song about the sun's power to make any day better.
He co-directed the video with Frank Borin, shooting on Venice Beach in California in late August because the place draws people from every walk of life who come to let loose. It surfaced on September 21, and an alternate clip featuring Jovanotti mixes Italian and English. The song also turned up in the films Soul Surfer, Yogi Bear and Blue Crush 2.
