"Downtown" kicked off the rollout for This Unruly Mess I've Made, the second album from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, landing as its lead single in August 2015 with a video posted to Lewis's YouTube channel the same day. The idea came from a misread title: Lewis made a beat on the road called "moping around", Macklemore saw "moped", and since both of them had bought mopeds to scoot away from the venues on tour, he wrote a song about the things.
Lewis produced it, and the guest list is a party: Eric Nally of Foxy Shazam alongside Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee and Grandmaster Caz. Critics had fun with the comparisons. AXS's William Pankey heard a sequel to "Thrift Shop", USA Today's Maeve McDermott likened it to "Uptown Funk", Billboard filed it under old-school hip-hop, and The Stranger's Larry Miezel Jr. waved it off as a kid-friendly stunt.
