"Steam" comes off Gold-Diggers Sound, the third Leon Bridges album, released by Columbia in July 2021, and on paper it's a group effort: Bridges shares the writing with Ricky Reed, Nate Mercereau, Justin Tranter, Ink, Jordan Blackmon, Antoine Katz and Trevor Lawrence, Jr., while Reed and Mercereau produced it and Steve Wyreman came in as co-producer.
The record takes its name from Gold-Diggers, the studio, hotel and bar in East Hollywood where Bridges lived while he wrote and recorded these songs. After throwing a Grammys party there in 2019, he settled into a residency, brought in musicians to jam, and built melodies and lyrics on top of their improvising, mostly without any concept mapped out in advance. That's a loose, communal way to make a record, and the crowded credit sheet on "Steam" shows it.
