"Gila Monster" came out in May 2023 as the lead half of a double shot from PetroDragonic Apocalypse, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's 24th studio album, paired with "Witchcraft". The two songs tell one story: in "Witchcraft" a band of witches tries to summon a giant beast and a black cat botches the spell, and "Gila Monster" follows the creature they called up by accident as it swells to ridiculous size. Stu Mackenzie, Joey Walker, Cook Craig, Ambrose Kenny-Smith and Michael Cavanagh share the writing credit, and the Australian psych crew leans all the way into stoner rock here.
A physical edition followed on June 20, a limited seven-inch sold at the band's own Los Angeles Record Fair. The video picked up a Best Video nomination at the 2023 ARIA Music Awards, and the song landed in the video game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4.
