"Foundations" was the lead single from Made of Bricks, Kate Nash's 2007 debut album, and her first single after Fiction Records signed her on the back of "Caroline's a Victim". It landed in June 2007, and it's gloriously bare-bones: the three basic chords of C major, C, F and G, looped into an eight-bar figure that never lets go, with the sections swapping back and forth until one new passage breaks in near the end.
Paul Epworth produced it and shares the writing credit, and it was his idea that she try something along the lines of Suicide's "Cheree", which runs on a similar progression. Steve Fitzmaurice mixed it and Mark "Top" Rankin engineered. Kinga Burza's video mixes footage, stills and stop-motion, with brightly colored household clutter everywhere: toothbrushes, shoes, socks, toys.
