"Wasted Youth" arrived in March 2019 on On the Line, and Jenny Lewis wrote every word and note of it herself, singing lead and playing piano. The room around her was stacked with ringers: Benmont Tench on organ and mellotron, Jim Keltner on drums, Don Was on bass, and a string section of Daphne Chen and Eric Gorfain on violin, Leah Katz on viola and Richard Dodd on cello.
Ryan Adams produced it and played guitar, with Lewis as co-producer, and Shawn Everett mixed. It's the sort of lineup that gives a song a warm, lived-in glow, and Lewis sounds right at home in the middle of it.
