"Almost (Sweet Music)" is the second song on Wasteland, Baby!, Hozier's second album, and the Irish singer wrote it by himself; it went out as the record's third single in January 2019. It's a love song told through a record collection, about what listening to music does to a person, with the lyrics tipping their hat to jazz greats like Duke Ellington and John Coltrane.
Folk at the core, it rides on handclaps and a gospel choir behind that warm, rich voice, and the credits are stacked: Booker T. Jones on organ, Paul Clarvis on tambourine, Alex Ryan on bass and keyboards, and Hozier himself on piano, guitar and a box of percussion. Markus Dravs produced it with him, and Shawn Everett mixed it. The video leans on the same jazz lineage, filled with musicians and dancers who come out of that tradition.
