"Behind The Lines" throws open Duke, Genesis's 1980 album, taking its time with a long instrumental introduction before Phil Collins starts to sing. Tony Banks, Collins and Mike Rutherford share the music credit and Rutherford wrote the words; Banks plays keyboards, Rutherford guitar and bass, and Collins drums. Genesis produced with engineer David Hentschel.

Collins heard something else in it. Running the tape back at double speed, he said, turned up another song hiding inside, and for Face Value, his February 1981 solo debut, he remade it as disco in the mold of Michael Jackson's Off the Wall, with Earth, Wind & Fire's horn section, the Phenix Horns. Meanwhile an edit that lopped off the intro, billed as "Behind the Lines – Part 2", backed the Duke single "Turn It On Again", and the song opened the band's shows on the 1981 Abacab tour.
