Duke, Genesis's tenth studio album, came out on Charisma in March 1980, and it's the sound of a band that nearly drifted apart finding its footing again. Early in 1979 Phil Collins had gone to Vancouver trying to save his first marriage while Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford made solo records; when Collins came home, the marriage over, he was brimming with songs, some of which landed here and some of which went on to his first solo album, Face Value.

Produced with David Hentschel, the record mixes songs the three wrote alone with pieces that grew out of jams in mid-1979, and the band found it an easy one to make. You can hear the balance: the old prog grandeur of the ten-minute "Duke's Travels"/"Duke's End" suite sitting beside lean, catchy singles like "Turn It On Again", "Duchess" and "Misunderstanding". It became their first number one album in the UK.
