"Paint the Town Red" landed on August 4, 2023, as the lead single from Scarlet, Doja Cat's fourth album, on Kemosabe and RCA, and it struts in on a sample of Dionne Warwick's 1964 "Walk on By", which is why Burt Bacharach and Hal David turn up in the songwriting credits. Earl on the Beat produced it and Serban Ghenea mixed. Over that silky, borrowed loop, Doja brushes off her critics and plants her flag on who she is, after a stretch of online spats with her own fans.
It turned into a monster, going to number one in 19 countries. In Britain no female rapper had ever topped the singles chart on her own before, and in America it became her first solo Hot 100 number one. It also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance.
