"Nobody Speak" was the lead single from The Mountain Will Fall, DJ Shadow's fifth album, and it arrived in 2016 with Run the Jewels trading verses on top. It first escaped in the oddest way imaginable: as part of Run the Jewels' Record Store Day release, a cardboard VR viewer bundled with a download code.
It's a bruiser. Shadow stacks a funky bass-and-drums groove, brass and looping guitars, lifts a sample from Caterina Valente's "Ol' Man River" and a vocal snatch from Audio Two's "Top Billin'", and then hands the mic to El-P and Killer Mike, picked because their delivery suited the track better than anyone's. The two share the writing credit with him, and the video followed that August.
