"Ruin" was the first taste of Sun, Cat Power's ninth studio album and her first set of all-original songs since The Greatest in 2006: Matador gave it away as a free download from its online store as the album's lead single, ahead of the record's September 2012 release. Cat Power wrote and produced it herself and played on it, with Jeff Dominguez engineering and Philippe Zdar on the mix.
Sun was the record where she swung off in yet another direction, and NPR's Bob Boilen, hearing the whole album, picked up on far more drive and a lot more electronics than before: drum machines, synths, the works. He called it bold.
