"Cross Bones Style" sits tenth on Moon Pix, the fourth album from Cat Power, the name Chan Marshall records under, released by Matador in September 1998. Its origin story is a strange one: on a single night in autumn 1997, by herself in the farmhouse in South Carolina that she and her then-boyfriend Bill Callahan called home, Marshall woke from a hallucinatory nightmare, grabbed her guitar to shake it off, and taped the next hour of playing. Out of those long changes came six songs, this one among them.
The recording came in January 1998, at Melbourne's Sing Sing Studio in Australia, mostly live, with her voice and guitar captured together, and Dirty Three's Jim White laid his drums on afterward.
