"Devil on My Shoulder" was the second official single from Billy Talent III, the Canadian band's third album, released as a single in August 2009 on Atlantic and Roadrunner. Brendan O'Brien produced and mixed it, with Nick DiDia behind the recording desk, and the songwriting is credited to the band as a whole.
It is post-hardcore with a hook sharpened to a point, and the band road-tested it early: it was the second song from the new record they played live before the album was out, after "Turn Your Back". The CD single carried "Don't Need to Pretend" as its B-side, a track that had only been available as a bonus for fans who bought the album online through Germany's Musicload.de. Years later it found a second life as a theme song for the 2018 Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.
