Alex Turner wrote every word and note of "I Ain't Quite Where I Think I Am", and it turned up on The Car, the seventh Arctic Monkeys album, released by Domino on 21 October 2022. It was one of the three singles that carried the record, along with "There'd Better Be a Mirrorball" and "Body Paint", and all three made the UK top 25.
James Ford, the band's go-to studio partner, produced and mixed it, and he shaped the arrangement with Turner and Bridget Samuels. It belongs to an album Turner mostly wrote at his Los Angeles home and in Paris, one that keeps wandering further from the band's old indie-rock racket into art rock, lounge pop, orchestral rock, funk and the glow of vintage film soundtracks, with lyrics hung up on nostalgia and the machinery of show business.
