"Sisyphus" belongs to My Finest Work Yet, Andrew Bird's twelfth solo studio album, which arrived on March 22, 2019. Bird wrote it alone, words and music, and produced it with Paul Butler.
The record around it marks a turn: it's the first time Bird made an openly political album, taking on a poisoned, divisive public mood, climate change and apathy. Its lead single, "Bloodless", was written in the stretch between the 2016 election and Charlottesville. Don't take the title too literally, either; like Are You Serious before it, My Finest Work Yet began life as a placeholder and a private joke. The cover plays along, restaging Jacques-Louis David's 1793 painting The Death of Marat, shot by creative director Amanda Demme.
