Amy Shark wrote "Adore" in a hurry and knew it was special the second she played back the rough take she'd recorded on her phone. She put it out herself, digitally, on 26 July 2016, then again that November once Sony Music Australia had signed her, and it later anchored her Night Thinker EP. M-Phazes shares the writing credit and produced it with Cam Bluff, and Charles Daly mixed. Shark pitched it at anybody crushing hard, a hushed confession meant to lend some nerve to people stuck in emotional turmoil.
Triple J hammered it before commercial radio caught on in early 2017; it came second in the station's Hottest 100 for 2016, peaked at number 3 on the ARIA chart and went 4× Platinum. It won Pop Work of the Year at the 2018 APRA Awards and took Song of the Year at the 2017 Queensland Music Awards, and it later underscored the Schitt's Creek scene where Alexis realizes she still loves her ex.
