My 21st Century Blues. by RAYE
My 21st Century Blues. is an album by RAYE, released in 2023. 2 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 5 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “Worth It”, on 4 lists with a best position of #34.
My 21st Century Blues, Raye's long-delayed debut, arrived on 3 February 2023 through the independent Human Re Sources, two years after she walked away from Polydor, a label she said had refused to release her album. Free at last, she wrote most of it herself and co-produced it with Mike Sabath, Di Genius and Punctual, with 070 Shake and Mahalia stepping in as guests. The genre list reads like a dare: house, blues, dancehall, R&B, hip-hop and jazz, often jostling inside a single song.
Under the swagger it's a brutally frank record, facing drug addiction, body dysmorphia and sexual assault head-on. "Escapism" went viral and gave her a first UK number one, "Worth It" cracked the top 40, and the album itself debuted at number two at home. Critics lined up behind it, it earned a Mercury Prize nomination, and at the 2024 Brit Awards it was crowned British Album of the Year.
