Spit, the debut from London, Ontario's Kittie, first came out on Ng Records in November 1999, and Artemis gave it a much wider push the following year. The band had started in 1996, and a set at Canadian Music Week in March 1999 got them signed; two months later they banged the album out in nine days at EMAC Recording Studios in their hometown with producer Garth Richardson.

It's nu metal with sharp teeth and a grab bag of other genres in the mix: Morgan Lander's guitar and lead vocals, Mercedes Lander pounding the drums, Fallon Bowman on guitar, and lyrics that go after sexism, abuse and betrayal, with hatred, conformity, ignorance and self-image in the crosshairs too. This original lineup never made another record, since bassist Tanya Candler was gone before release and her replacement, Talena Atfield, is the face on the sleeve. "Brackish" and "Charlotte" were the singles, and with word of mouth online and relentless touring it went gold, still the band's biggest seller.
