Sob Rock by John Mayer
Sob Rock is an album by John Mayer, released in 2021. 2 songs from it have charted on rock radio countdowns, with 11 countdown appearances in total. The biggest is “Last Train Home”, on 7 lists with a best position of #11.
Sob Rock, John Mayer's eighth studio album, came out on Columbia on July 16, 2021, and it's a knowing love letter to the soft rock of the 1980s: pastel synths, glossy guitar tones and heartache played for maximum smoothness. It gathers up singles he'd been dropping since 2018, "New Light", "I Guess I Just Feel Like" and "Carry Me Away", and sets them beside new songs led by "Last Train Home", with Maren Morris adding guest vocals.
Mayer plays it straight and sly at the same time, and his guitar is all tasteful sting and chime. "Wild Blue" is the late-night slow burn of the set. He spent the months after its release on the road with Dead & Company before taking the album out on his own solo tour in 2022, and it turned out to be his last record for Columbia.
