"Wild Blue" comes off Sob Rock, the eighth John Mayer album, released on Columbia in July 2021, and it turned out to be his last for the label: the following March he said he had chosen not to renew his deal. Mayer wrote it alone, sings it and produced it with Don Was, with Aaron Sterling on drums, Sean Hurley on electric bass, Jeff Babko on keyboards and Lenny Castro on percussion. Mark "Spike" Stent mixed it, and Chad Franscoviak and Curt Schneider engineered.
It sits on a record that also swept up singles stretching back to "New Light" in 2018.
