Battle Studies, John Mayer's fourth studio album, came out on Columbia on November 17, 2009, and it's the sound of a blues convert sliding back toward pop. On Continuum and with the John Mayer Trio he had gone digging into the blues and rock that first hooked him; here he eases off the fretboard fireworks and goes for soft-focus, radio-ready pop rock, buffed to a high sheen. Mayer produced it with Steve Jordan between February and August 2009, working at the Battle Studies room in Calabasas, Capitol Studios in Hollywood and The Village in West Los Angeles.

"Who Says", "Assassin" and "Edge Of Desire" show the range, from breezy strum to slow-burning guitar moodiness. It went straight in at number one on the Billboard 200, moving more than 286,000 copies in its opening week, drew warm reviews and went platinum. Born and Raised followed.
