Jeff Tweedy wrote "One Wing" alone, words and music, and Wilco were playing it on stage well before it turned up on Wilco (The Album) in 2009. By August 2008 Billboard had caught the band road-testing it at shows, along with "Sonny Feeling", with a new studio record on the way after two years of touring behind Sky Blue Sky.
The album took shape a long way from Chicago, at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios in Auckland, New Zealand, where members of the band had gone to cut material for a 7 Worlds Collide compilation benefiting Oxfam. Jim Scott, the engineer on Being There, Summerteeth and Sky Blue Sky, recorded the song and co-produced it with the band, then mixed it with Kevin Dean, while T.J. Doherty, Jordan Stone and Jason Tobias pitched in on the engineering.
