"Kamikaze" comes off What If Nothing, Walk the Moon's fourth studio album, and RCA sent it to US alternative radio as the record's second single in April 2018. Nicholas Petricca, Eli Maiman, Kevin Ray and Sean Waugaman wrote it with Ben Berger, Ryan McMahon and Ryan Rabin, and that outside trio helped produce it. It's a stacked, many-layered thing, alt-rock and pop with dance-music circuitry wired in, and the lyric is about going all in and keeping yourself firmly in hand.
Critics split: some couldn't shake the hook, others heard Imagine Dragons and winced. Radio took to it anyway, sending it to number six on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, the band's fifth top ten there. The video drops a troupe of dancers into a stark white room, and the band took it to Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
