Tyla's "Water" came out in July 2023 on Fax and Epic as the lead single from what became her self-titled 2024 debut, and it carried the South African singer a long way from home. It's amapiano at its core, laced with pop, R&B and Afrobeats, and the lyric is about craving a closeness deep enough to trust. Sammy SoSo produced it and played bass, Corey Marlon Lindsay-Keay produced the vocals, Leandro Hidalgo mixed it, and Tyla wrote it with a team that included Tricky Stewart.
The payoff was huge: multi-Platinum certifications in South Africa and the US, Diamond in Brazil, remix versions by Travis Scott and Marshmello that November, the first-ever Grammy for Best African Music Performance and an MTV VMA for Best Afrobeats Video. Rolling Stone crowned it the best Afropop song of 2023.
