"The Mountain" fronted Outsider, the sixth album by Canadian rockers Three Days Grace, landing as the lead single in January 2018. Bassist Brad Walst said it dates back to September 2016 and is about pushing through life's daily grind, and drummer Neil Sanderson described it as facing the same chores again and again with no choice in the matter. They wrote it with singer Matt Walst, Barry Stock, Gavin Brown and Johnny Andrews.
Howard Benson, Brown and the band produced it, and Chris Lord-Alge mixed. Matt Walst has said he sang higher on it than ever before, reaching what he reckoned was a high D on the last chorus. It gave them their 13th number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, drawing level with Van Halen, and turned up on the NBA 2K19 soundtrack.
