The Fray took "Heartless", Kanye West's breakup song from 808s & Heartbreak, and reworked it as a pop-rock ballad, trying it out first on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge in February 2009 and then putting it out as a single that April. West wrote it with No I.D., Kid Cudi and Malik Yusef; the Fray's version puts it in the hands of Isaac Slade on piano and Joe King on guitar, the two of them sharing the vocals.
Mike Flynn produced it, Warren Huart engineered and Manny Marroquin mixed, and it rides along with the band's 2009 self-titled album. Reviews ran from mixed to warm, with some critics taken by where the band steered it musically, and it scraped onto the Hot 100 at 79. The video, out that August, brings the doodles in a boy's notebook to life.
