"Fiery Jack", the Fall's fourth single, came out on Illegal Records in 1980 on the heels of "Rowche Rumble", and it rattles along on a rockabilly beat with Mark E. Smith sneering over the top. Jack is no young punk. Smith said he was kicking against the notion that you're finished once you pass 29, and writing up the hard-living middle-aged men in the pubs he went to, blokes pushing 50 with more guts than any of the preeners. Simon Reynolds heard a portrait of a battered Manchester pub lifer, the product of generations of industrial graft, and wondered whether Jack was on speed as well.

Steve Hanley's bass and Mike Leigh's drums drive it, Marc Riley and Craig Scanlon scrape away on guitar, and Hanley, Riley and Scanlon share the writing credit with Smith.
