"exile" is the duet at the heart of folklore, Taylor Swift's eighth album, from 2020, with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon trading lines with her as one half of an estranged couple still arguing in silence. Swift wrote it with Vernon and Joe Alwyn, credited as William Bowery, and Aaron Dessner produced it with Alwyn, playing piano, electric guitar, synthesizer and percussion himself, while Rob Moose layered on violin and viola.
It's hushed but widescreen, indie folk with a gospel and chamber-pop undertow, Vernon's low baritone sinking beneath Swift's sweeter voice. Critics singled it out as one of the album's best, and it opened at number six on the Hot 100, higher than any Bon Iver song had ever gone. It also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
