“Solitude is Bliss” by Tame Impala

"Solitude Is Bliss" was the first taste of Innerspeaker, cut during the album's 2009 sessions and sent out as Tame Impala's lead single in April 2010, wrapped in artwork by Leif Podhajsky, the Australian artist who also dressed Innerspeaker and later Lonerism. Kevin Parker wrote it, sang it, recorded and produced it and handled the instruments, leaving the drums to Jay Watson.

It opens on electric guitar strummed through a thick phaser, then a drum fill barrels in with the bass right behind it. The verses go funky, all tight, choppy picking, and in the pre-chorus Parker's double-tracked voice ping-pongs from one speaker to the other, a headphone trick that makes the whole thing feel like it's happening inside your skull.
