Sylvan Esso's story starts with "Hey Mami", the band's first single, a 2013 release backed with "Play It Right" and later the curtain-raiser on their self-titled debut album, where the flip side resurfaces as track nine. Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn wrote it, the band recorded it on their own, and BJ Burton sat in on the mix. It was also their only single for Trekky Records before the move to Partisan.
The reviews were warm. Pitchfork's Ian Cohen made the case that it genuinely works as a folk song, in the ethnomusical sense of the term, and Here and Now's Robin Young and Jeremy Hobson made it one of their Songs of the Week in March 2014. It never got a video of its own; that went to "Play It Right" instead, directed by the band with Remedy.
