"Showbiz Kids", the first single off Steely Dan's 1973 album Countdown to Ecstasy, is Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's sneering jab at the Los Angeles high life. It rides a four-bar loop, 30 seconds of drums, bass, piano and a chanted backing vocal with a Las Vegas pun borrowed from a Lenny Bruce routine, and everything else got stacked on top. Rick Derringer's slide guitar was cut at Caribou Ranch, the words tip a hat to the band's own "Reelin' in the Years", and on the fade Becker grabs a harmonica, a rare sight, amid babbling voices, roadies Warren Wallace and John Famular among them.

Gary Katz produced, with Roger Nichols engineering. Cash Box heard an infectious chorus sung in the manner of Nilsson's "Coconut", and in 1996 Super Furry Animals looped a slice of it for a single of their own, once Fagen had backed down from his first refusal.
