"Call Me" comes from Gump, the second album by Canada's Sons of Freedom, released in 1991, a record whose title the band stayed cagey about, blaming it variously on Aerosmith's Pump, Van Halen's "Jump" and goaltender Gump Worsley.

The making of it was scrappy and loose. The band sold their tour van to pay for the sessions, and with Chris Wardman producing, most of the album's tracks grew out of studio jams, sifted afterwards for the parts that stood up as songs while the groove kept rolling. Frontman Jim Newton, credited as Jim Kingston, had written the lyrics in the fall of 1989, drawing on what an acting class taught him about telling a story, and he left his guitar alone this time so the band wouldn't repeat their debut. Matt Wallace mixed "Call Me", with Ken Marshall assisting.
