"Some Kind of Stranger" comes from First and Last and Always, the debut album by English goth rockers the Sisters of Mercy, released on their own Merciful Release label on March 11, 1985. Gary Marx wrote the music and Andrew Eldritch the words, and Eldritch sings it over Marx and Wayne Hussey's guitars, Craig Adams's bass and the band's drum machine, Doktor Avalanche. David M. Allen produced.

The sessions began in June 1984 at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, with more work at Genetic Studios in Reading, and ran long, not wrapping until November. It was the only album this lineup made: Hussey, Marx and Adams walked out later in 1985, and Hussey and Adams went off to form the Mission.
