"Drive-In Movies" comes off Supernova, Ray LaMontagne's fifth album, which RCA put out in April 2014. He wrote it alone, and Dan Auerbach produced it, part of the partnership that shaped the whole record.
That pairing is the story of Supernova. Rolling Stone's Will Hermes heard Auerbach coaxing brighter, vintage colors out of a singer with years of cozy songs behind him, and called the result a logical next step, while another critic found the album unapologetically retro. The reviews ran mostly warm, and the title track went out as the lead single.
